Saudi Arabia has stated that it is willing to host a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, after the two leaders recently spoke over the phone. Negotiating a resolution to the nearly three-year-old war in Ukraine is the goal of this possible summit.
In an official statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the Kingdom expressed its commitment to supporting regional peace efforts and praised the February 12 meeting between Trump and Putin. The ministry added, "The Kingdom expresses its welcome to hosting the summit in Saudi Arabia, and reaffirms its ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine"
Trump said he anticipates meeting Putin in Saudi Arabia, their first in-person meeting since he became president. "We ultimately expect to meet probably in Saudi Arabia," he said, adding that both presidents are keen to begin talks to end the crisis.
Although talks are continuing, no specific plans have been finalized as of yet, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He underlined that planning such a big gathering would require weeks or even months of preparation.
Saudi Arabia's readiness to host this meeting is indicative of its larger diplomatic involvement in global disputes, which includes its prior attempts to mediate disputes between Russia and Ukraine. Since the beginning of the crisis, the Kingdom has organized a number of discussions intended to reduce tensions and forward peace measures.
